Stop what you’re doing right now. July is actually the best time to bag a festive flight bargain to Europe, according to a leading trip planner and booking site. Flight data analysed by Rome2Rio suggests that flight prices will rise by as much as 21 per cent every month, from now till Christmas.

So what is the best time of year to book a flight?

Those flying to the southern hemisphere to celebrate Christmas will find flights at their most expensive during September and October, however prices dip in November. For those heading to Canada for Xmas, flight prices peak in August, and then recover in September. Data suggests prices from the UK to the USA should remain fairly constant from now until the festive season arrives.

Non-domestic flights departing on Christmas Day actually represent the best value, although flights within the UK peak on December 25 – so local bargains will be hard to find.

“Turning your thoughts to tinsel and turkey during a heatwave may be a struggle but now really is the time to plan and book your Christmas getaway, especially if you want to visit German festive markets or find winter sun in Spain,” says Kirsteene Phelan, Rome2rio Chief Operating Officer. “Demand and therefore prices will increase as growing numbers of our users choose to travel overseas during the festive period, so selecting your day of travel could mean you have more change to jingle in your pocket.”
The company reports that there has been a ten per cent rise in international festive travel. Europe is our favoured festive holiday spot.
